The Penn Libraries provides a network of information resources and knowledge services that are vital to teaching, research, and learning at the University of Pennsylvania. This network includes 19 physical libraries, recognized for their collections, and a digital library known for innovation and richness of content. Through dynamic programming and exhibitions, and through the acquisition and preservation of literary and artistic artifacts, the Penn Libraries documents a wealth of social and historical periods, bringing scholarship to life at the University and in the various communities it serves.

Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Director, the Fine Arts Librarian is a subject specialist and first point of contact for reference questions, workshops, instruction, and consultations on the contemporary and historical aspects of art, architecture, city and regional planning, historic preservation, landscape architecture, studio art, and urban spatial analytics at the University of Pennsylvania. The Librarian facilitates 3D scanning at Fisher Fine Arts Library, supervises student workers who support 3D scanning requests, and works collaboratively with colleagues across the whole of the Penn Libraries. Active in outreach, the Fine Arts Librarian develops and implements specialized workshops on topics such as citation management, plagiarism, and research skills in service to the Stuart Weitzman School of Design, the Department of the History of Art, and, more broadly, the School of Arts and Sciences. The Librarian, in collaboration with Assistant Director and Director, participates in building Fisher collections and exhibitions planning. The Librarian works collaboratively with colleagues at the Museum and Music Library and takes part in Academic Engagement initiatives including support for scholarly publishing. This position participates in assessment related to ongoing evaluation and improvement of existing access and research services in Fisher and participates in Libraries-wide task forces and committees as well as appropriate professional associations.

Job Responsibilities

Oversees and assesses research, instruction, and outreach programs for the Fisher Fine Arts Library.
Participates in Libraries-wide initiatives including online chat and ticket response and participating in the Critical Writing Program.
Manages specific library funds for the development of the print and electronic collections.
Participates in Fisher exhibition programming.
Participates in long-range planning for the Fisher Fine Arts Library.
Participates in the general maintenance of the Fisher & Material Libraries’ websites including social media.
Coordinates 3D scanning services, including appointments, outreach, and engagement.
Supervises 2 student workers.

Qualifications

Required

ALA-accredited master's degree in library science and 2-3 years of reference and instruction experience, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
Strong analytical and critical thinking and written and oral communications.
Strong service orientation and experience with public service, reference service, customer service, or other similar work.
Experience working with art and architecture collections, students, and faculty.
Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
Comfort with learning and working with scanning technology and digital projects.

Preferred

Background in an arts, architecture, or design discipline.
Ability to create online research guides for subjects and classes using Springshare or similar software.
Familiarity with integrated library systems.
Possess a willingness and ability to work independently with new technologies such as 3D scanning.
Demonstrated interest or proficiency with new technology.
Experience in event programming and/or project management.
Proficiency in one or more non-English languages.
