Hi Lee,

When I started grad. school in Art History at UCLA in fall 1979, Mikelle Omari was working on her PhD under Arnold Rubin and was working as a T.A. I just looked for her resume to see if she might fit your timeline and found this: https://www.u.arizona.edu/~aasp/CV0807.pdf. It shows that she first taught Afro-American and African Art History courses in 1973-74 (and she now goes by Mikelle Smith Omari-Tunkara.) She defines her specialization as African Diaspora Art, and I see that this includes African American Art and Culture. So I gather that she does indeed meet your timeline (and subjec) criteria.

Best wishes,

I’m not sure that he fits your criteria but John Hunter was a black art historian who taught at Cleveland State University until his retirement some years ago.  He was a scholar of the Renaissance.  As far as I know, he now lives in NYC.

The Dictionary of Art Historians, arthistorians.info, is working to identify people of color who were art historians of black American art, working before 1980.  We would be grateful to the ARLIS membership to help identify these historic teachers or the places where such documentation could be found.

We are defining black art historians for this purpose as:

  1. Anyone of color with a professorial appointment teaching art history (or US black art history)

  2. Anyone of color consistently documenting black American art or artists either as a writer or in a museum or in a secondary educational setting

  3. Any person of color who inspired subsequent black art historians during the period 1900-1979.

We have identified the following art writers/teachers:

Archer-Straw, Petrine

Driskell, David C.

Du Bois, W. E. B.

Lewis, Samella

Locke, Alain

McElroy, Guy C.

Porter, James A.

Simon, Walter Augustus

Williams, Sylvia H.

Gratitude for you leads and thoughts,

Lee
