Dear Friends and Colleagues: This sad news has shaken those of us who worked closely with Danny. He seemed like he would forever be a constant with us - always full of vim and vigor! He was so generous professionally and personally, and key to making things happen - whether at MoMA in the library or with their union or with bringing Arcade, NYARC's catalog, to life. Danny was a colleague, teacher, mentor, and friend to so many of us. I can still hear him say, "Whoa! Far out!!" followed by an ebullient chuckle after learning about some new metadata transformation he could execute. He was a master cataloger, a colleague always at the ready to help, a passionate fighter for workers' rights, and all-around a heck of a guy. He will be so dearly missed. I know many of us weren't able to make his services last weekend and feel the need to celebrate his life together. A group of us will be gathering next Thursday, July 27 at 12 PT/3 ET via Zoom to remember Danny and support each other. Please join us. He was a pillar of the NYC Catalogers Discussion Group from its inception. You could always count on him to show up at meetings, have something sensible and pragmatic to say, and make sure that by the end of the meeting somebody had volunteered to host the next meeting (I had to smile when I saw this postscript at the end of a report on one of the NYCCDG meetings: “Update: Daniel Fermon sent an email message regarding the omission of a decision on the date/time/place of the next CDG - this has not yet been resolved as of the submission of these minutes.”) Such a nice smile and a nice person. It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Danny Fermon, who joined MoMA in 1971 as a Page in the Library. Encouraged by Library director Clive Phillpot, Danny earned an MLS in 1991 and rose through the library ranks, eventually being promoted to Associate Librarian, Cataloging in 2003. He was active in the Museum’s homegrown union, PASTA (Professional and Administrative Staff) MoMA, and later with Local 2110, notably as Shop Steward. Danny was one of the Museum’s longest serving employees, and in fact was with MoMA for more than half of its ninety-three year existence. Danny took his roles as Associate Librarian and Shop Steward seriously, and he was always quick to greet colleagues with a warm smile and a laugh. And his skills as a cataloger were legendary. His passing was sudden, and Danny is survived by his siblings: Charles Fermon and Priscilla Fermon.
