The Frederick M. Asher and Catherine E. Asher photograph collection of Indian, Southeast Asian, and Middle Eastern 35mm color and black and white slides. Depicting architecture, art, and artifacts. There are likely over 10,000 slides. Additionally included is their organizational catalog which includes black and white prints of each slide affixed to an index card indicating the location. Additional film negatives are included with this collection. Miscellaneous books, notebooks, and ephemera from their archive is also included in this lot.

A sample of locations include, among thousands more, the following: From India, Hilal Khan Qazi’s Mosque; Dak Bungalow Mosque Complex; Dargah of Bu Ali Qalandar and Tomb and Mosque of Shah Jalal al-Din in Panipat; Mosque and Tomb of Imam Nasir in Sonepat; Tomb and Madrasa of Sheikh Chilli in Thanesar; Jal Mahal and the Tomb of Shah Quli Khan in Narnaul; Moth ki Mosque, the Tomb of Adham Khan, Dargah of Bakhtiyar Kaki, Sher Shah or Lal Dawaza, and Humayun Darwaza in New Delhi; Mariyam’s House and Diwan-i-Am in Fatehpur Sikri; Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque in Purana Qila; Khusro Bagh in Prayagraj; Chowk Masjid in Faizabad; Atala Mosque and Shahi Qila in Jaunpur; Saadat Ali Khan’s Tomb in Lucknow; the Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah in Agra. From Afghanistan, the Mosque at Lashkar Gah. From Pakistan: Rawat Fort and Shah Chand Wali Gate (Rohtas Fort) in Punjab; Badshahi Mosque, Baradari of Wazir Khan, Asif Khan’s Tomb, and Jahangir’s Tomb in Lahore; and Hiran Minar in Sheikhupura. From Bangladesh: Kherua Mosque in Sherpur; Lalbagh Fort and Khan Mohammad Mirza/Mridha Mosque in Dakha; Bagha Mosque in Bagha; Choto Sona Mosque in Shahbazpur; Kusumba Mosque in Naogaon.

Frederick M. Asher and Catherine E. Asher were prominent scholars in the field of Art History. Both dedicated their lives to the education of students, teaching for many years as professors at the University of Minnesota. They both had a passion for South Asian art, traveling extensively throughout India, Asia, and the Middle East. Selections from their travels and careers as avid art historians are offered in this auction. Their collection includes Indian jewelry, Japanese woodblock prints, an incredible slide collection, and much more.
