Job Summary
The Office of the Associate Director for Research and Knowledge Creation at the Getty Research Institute seeks a creative candidate with strong partnership skills who will play a key role in developing the data infrastructure and
assisting with the data needs of a vibrant division that sustains key resources and databases related to the study of art, architecture, and cultural heritage. The main duties will be to contribute to an array of data transformation, analysis, and facilitation
activities for two product teams, the Getty Provenance Index and the Getty Vocabularies Program, both of which are moving to or have already transitioned to a Linked Data environment. The ideal candidate will execute and manage complex data tasks across the
cycle of extraction, manipulation, analysis, and ingestion, while also advising on and helping to implement streamlined data-oriented workflows across the division. This position will report directly to the Associate Director for Research and Knowledge Creation.
Major Job Responsibilities
- Transforms, reconciles, analyzes, and disseminates data of a high degree of complexity, including raw text data produced by Optical Character Recognition and data structured in various formats as contributed by a range of
contributors and institutions
- Exercises expert knowledge of established standards and best practices related to data workflows and the semantic web
- Applies and investigates methods of computational analysis and the use of data management and analysis tools to execute and manage complex data tasks across the cycle of extraction, manipulation, analysis,
and ingestion
- Provides guidance and mentorship to professional staff
- Provides management to consult on, design, and implement data workflows and management practices
- May provide service to the profession and contribute to new scholarship
- Analyzes highly complex problems, directs, and implements solutions, including recommending new standards, best practices, and approaches to data workflows
- Work in partnership internally across the division and with other Research Institute divisions, in addition to working closely with Getty Digital
- May research, plan, and manage projects
- May work in partnership on the development of data management plans and guidelines
- Engages in community management by contributing to the recommendation and implementation of policies and standards
Qualifications
- Masters degree in data science, information and/or library science, or related discipline
- Minimum 7 years related professional experience
- Demonstrated experience working with Python, JSON, CSV, and XML, knowledge of R and CIDOC-CRM or linked.art schema highly desirable; will require developing expertise with JSON-LD and SPARQL
- Experience working with cultural heritage data
- Knowledge of and/or experience working in the visual arts, library, and/or archives domains highly desirable
