Dear ARLIS-L Moderators—

The purpose of this message to inform ARLIS Chapters and members of an original collaborative art publication that is available for donation to your member institutions.  I am hopeful that you will allow this message to be posted on ARLIS-L Listserv.   Kindly contact me if you have any questions regarding this message or ART/LIFE.

I am a retired librarian working with the ARTLIFE Foundation in Ventura California.  The ARTLIFE Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of Ventura artist Joe Cardella.  Joe passed away in May 2018 and our Foundation was formed.  We maintain the archives housing his papers, works of object art, and ART/LIFE Limited Editions.

ART/LIFE is a collaborative art publication created and edited by Cardella. ''Communication for the creative mind,'' is the way Joe often described ART/LIFE.   Artists from around the globe mailed up to 200 original prints, collages, drawings, visual poetry and more to Cardella every month.  The pages were then assembled into an issue with each page itself a work of art.  Remarkably, Joe published 11 issues per year for 25 years from 1981-2005.   He claimed the Editions were the “longest running monthly artists’ publication.”

We would like to make this unique collaborative art publication available to ARLIS members.  In October 2022, our Board made the generous decision to offer issues of ART/LIFE to Museums and Libraries at no cost to you.  We do have a number of issues from Volumes 8-25 available for ARLIS member institutions.

It is our Mission to preserve Joe Cardella’s lifework and legacy.  Since our Board made this decision last year, we shipped close to 800 issues to museums and libraries including MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, University of Michigan Libraries, and UC Berkeley.  Our volunteers recently sent shipments to the LA County Museum of ART and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.

By donating the Editions to your member institutions, we are ensuring ART/LIFE will be available to art historians, researchers, and creators for years to come.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding Joe Cardella or ART/LIFE.

Kind Regards,

Jeanne
