Job Summary

The Library Research Services Manager coordinates the daily operations of the Library at Dumbarton Oaks and serves as the initial point of contact for public services and collections access. This includes developing and maintaining services for research fellows and visiting researchers in coordination with Dumbarton Oaks’ academic programs. This position manages access requests, research appointments in the library and archives, and reproduction requests, and will coordinate reference with the subject librarians. The position also supervises inter-library loan and collection management staff and services, monitors routine library expenditures, evaluates budget performance, and assists in developing budget priorities to align with library goals. This position also coordinates operational support with the Security and Facilities department.

Duties and Responsibilities

  *   Provide research services for fellows, staff, and readers
  *   Manage library access in coordination with the manager of academic programs, program coordinators, subject librarians, rare books and special collections managers, and security department
  *   Coordinate Public Services working group meetings
  *   Provide instruction and develop informational materials for all new library users on library resources, services, policies, and procedures
  *   Plan and implement Library orientations in coordination with the academic program staff
  *   Coordinate reproduction request process
  *   Assist in coordinating and providing reading room coverage in Rare Books and the Image Collections and Fieldwork Archives
  *   Supervise circulation and interlibrary loan staff and functions
  *   Develop and maintain circulation and access policies
  *   Oversee management of the General Collection
  *   Ensure effective Library operations
  *   Assist Library Director in the development of annual library budget
  *   Monitor routine budget performance and expenditures
  *   Maintain library data in shared systems, including the DO website and Salesforce
  *   Develop and maintain assessment and metrics for the library
  *   Manage library equipment for researchers
  *   Develop and maintain appropriate circulation systems
  *   Develop, maintain, and document collection security guidelines
  *   Assist in training security staff posted in the library
  *   Coordinate building maintenance with facilities department
  *   Serve on working groups and committees as appropriate

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Library Research Services Manager supervises one part-time exempt staff member and one full-time non-exempt staff.

Basic Qualifications

Master’s in Library and Information Science; 3+ years of supervisory experience; experience working with integrated library systems; knowledge of collection management procedures.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Graduate degree in a field related to the programs of study supported by Dumbarton Oaks; educational background in the humanities or social sciences; reading knowledge of one or more languages other than English; experience working with Alma, ILLiad, Microsoft Power Automate, Microsoft Forms; familiarity with library security procedures; strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; the ability to work effectively in teams and small groups; a strong commitment to public service and to outreach.
