Introduction to Text Encoding

The Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Guidelines are a standard defining an XML vocabulary for representing textual materials in digital form. The creation of digital scholarly texts is a core part of the digital humanities and many digital humanities grants and publications require encoding texts in accordance with the TEI Guidelines. This course will introduce students to text encoding according to the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Guidelines to provide context and to support analysis and visualization of features of text relevant to humanities scholars. Students will learn the basic building blocks of a TEI document and become familiar with the TEI Guidelines as well as managing text encoding projects in ways that support uniform data creation.

This course focuses on learning the basic principles of identity management including terminology, goals of identity management, resources to verify and establish identities, and the use of identity management in web, cataloging, and metadata work.


Students will become familiar with the fundamental principles of identity management, understand the goals of identity management, and explore similarities and differences of identity management and authority work between metadata, web, and cataloging work. Additionally, students will become familiar with resources for identity management and explore the intersection of web, metadata, and cataloging as well as evolving practices and issues related to identity including privacy, shifting identities, and more. By the end of the course students will: Develop a firm understanding of the basic principles of identity management; Understand the challenges and opportunities of identity management including privacy, shifting identities, among others; Explore identity management across digital library / institutional repository, web, and library cataloging through comparing data and practices.
