Job Summary

The Getty Library seeks an experienced candidate as a Library Assistant IV to work with the Special Collections Reading Room team to assist with public service activities and oversee the Special Collections Reading Room. Reporting to the Special Collections Reading Room Supervisor, the Library Assistant IV’s primary duties are to assist in overseeing the daily operations of the Special Collections Reading Room and Special Collections circulation. This position will serve as the primary team point of contact in the absence of the Supervisor. The Library Assistant IV provides services to a wide variety of staff and researchers, monitors the Special Collections Reading Room, and assists with classes, tours, and workshops.

The Library Assistant IV also replies to routine queries from staff and researchers, referring more complex queries to reference librarians and curators as appropriate. The Library Assistant IV serves as the point person for specific tasks and projects and oversees and/or supervises the work of others and will be expected to take a prominent role in assessing big picture needs and managing priorities for the section.

Major Job Responsibilities

  *   Daily paging and reshelving of a high volume of material
  *   Ensures proper handling, care, storage, preservation, and tracking of collection items
  *   Oversees shelf-reading and other projects with Special Collections Reading Room team to maintain inventory of the collections
  *   May participate in meetings with other departmental sections
  *   Applies advanced knowledge of libraries, online systems and records
  *   Assists with complex projects and resolves complex problems
  *   Supervises Special Collections Reading Room desk and satellite spaces
  *   Plans, coordinates, and performs vault shifts and other collection maintenance with others
  *   Sets up Special Collections Reading Room and satellite spaces
  *   Works with supervisor to update departmental workflows and helps write new ones
  *   Assists with patron requests and Reading Room appointments
  *   Demonstrates initiative, works under litter supervision and in partnership with others
  *   Participates in special projects as assigned

Qualifications

  *   Bachelor’s degree in art history or related discipline preferred
  *   Graduate course work in library & information science, art history or a related discipline preferred
  *   Minimum 4 years related experience, preferably in an academic, arts, or cultural institution
  *   Supervisory and training experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  *   Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  *   Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  *   Familiarity with at least 1-2 foreign languages preferred
  *   Strong capability for utilizing Library Information Systems, finding aids, and other online resources
  *   Ability to learn library-specific software applications
  *   Requires ability to handle rare and unique materials with care
  *   Ability to adapt quickly from routine tasks to advanced customer service for researchers
  *   Physical activity for extended periods at various times throughout the day including lifting library materials weighing up to 40 pounds and pushing heavy book carts
  *   Ability to climb industrial ladders required in order to page and shelve from the collections located on 12-foot high compact shelving units.
  *   Ability to work in partnership with others
