You could search the online version of Lugt’s Repertoire des ventes to see if the auction is listed there.
You might also check other works (catalogues raisonnes?) to see if a catalog entry for the work mentions the auction.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Help with an auction catalog
Hello collective art wisdom,
I am having some trouble hunting down an auction record related to the provenance of a piece our museum owns. The sale is listed simply as "sale, London, Sotheby's, 22 December 1883, lot 357
(with four others to Bell)" and the work of art is Wooded Landscape with Donkey and Figures
by Thomas Gainsborough.
I have tried SCIPIO, WorldCat, and Google to no avail. My curator insists that the date is correct, but I cannot find ANY evidence that this sale ever happened. Does
anyone know another place for me to look?
