Like Ed, my connection with Phil Rees goes back to my days when attending graduate school at UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a fabulous mentor to those of us who aspired to be art librarians, and continued to receive his sage advice as we entered the profession. I would see Phil and sometimes Peg at many ARLIS/NA meetings including those in the Southeast. At one of the NYC conferences I had a harrowing taxi ride with Phil and others across Manhattan! And Phil was the first person who told me about a great store with wonderfully designed items, Crate and Barrel, before these shops spread around the United States! Such a great librarian and man. He will be missed.

I'm saddened to hear of the passing of Phil Rees.  I served as a library science intern in 1977-78 under Phil's supervision at the UNC-Chapel Hill Art Library. Phil was a wonderful mentor who supported many careers over the years besides my own. He had a variety of interests, as has been noted, including many charitable endeavors.  Perhaps the last time I saw him was in 2019, when he and his wife, Peg, attended the 2019 conference of the Society of Architectural Historians Pacific Northwest Chapter in Portland, Oregon. I recall that he was especially interested in seeing that city's cast iron architecture. Thank you, Phil, for providing a good role model for so many.
