What a great assignment – it’s a very good thing that the professor realizes there is art beyond the old ideas of canon, and wants to act on this.
I agree with colleagues that marginalized, while at times an accurate description of the situation, is a problematic label. I’m coming to that conclusion after having a taught a Non-Western Theatre survey course (and yes, a 200-level survey for “the rest of the world” is both a small step toward solution, and an illustration of the problem…) and I can definitely say that Kabuki actors, for example, would be surprised to hear their work described as marginalized.
Maybe instead the label can describe the fact that this work moves toward solution: “Art beyond the traditional canon”?
Wordsmiths, other ideas?

Subject: Terminology suggestions: Art from "marginalized" communities
Hello all - This may be a simple question to answer:
In working with my community college, art survey instructor to re-develop the IL component in their courses, we plan to set an annotated bib. assignment for which we'll create a Guide.
The guide name at present is "Art of Marginalized Communities."
Question:
Is there a term art librarians and historians prefer instead of marginalized?
I didn't see marginalized in the AAT, but may not have searched it correctly.
The instructor has identified the following groups to include in the guide as a starting point:
- Folk art
- Children's art
- Women
- Persons with disabilities
- LGBTQ+
- (Non-western)
