Princeton University Library (PUL) seeks an innovative, inclusive, & thoughtful leader to be Assistant University Librarian for Special Collections Technical Services. Reporting to the Deputy Head of Special Collections and as part of the Special Collections (SC) Management Team, the incumbent manages a staff of 12 FTE in 2 locations who make special collections print, manuscript, & archives material accessible. This person both establishes a vision & sets goals for technical services & oversees the day-to-day operations in a department with vigorous public services & acquisitions programs. The focus is on efficient & effective processing using current standards & procedures in the context of a commitment to inclusive & reparative metadata work. The department's collections are used extensively by both the Princeton and greater academic communities.


Responsibilities:

  *   Manage an Archival Description & Processing Team who accession & process more than 1,000 l.f. & 150 single items each year & manage digitization efforts
  *   Supervise the Collection Services team in SC Firestone responsible for acquisitions, basic cataloging & metadata support, & end processing for print materials
  *   Guide staff regarding workflows, policies, & procedures, including overseeing the Library's finding aids site, & archival metadata activities
  *   Collaborate with other PUL teams to coordinate strategies, workflows, & prioritization of resources, especially the SC public services & SC acquisitions teams, & the heads of Cataloging & Metadata Services (CaMS) & rare book cataloging within CaMS
  *   Provide public services support to the department
  *   Represent SC Technical Services on the department's management team & committees within SC & PUL
  *   Engage in professional development activities, including participating in regional, national, & international professional organizations

Requirements:

  *   Accredited master's degree in library, archival, or information science with a special collections/archival focus, or an equivalent advanced degree & relevant experience
  *   5+ years' experience in technical services at an academic research library, archives, historical society or similar cultural heritage institution
  *   Experience supervising professional staff & creating a supportive work environment
  *   Demonstrated understanding of best archival & library descriptive practices & standards such DACS, EAD & MARC & emerging standards & practices for inclusive & reparative description
  *   Fluency with discovery tools & collection management systems such as ArcLight, ArchivesSpace & Blacklight
  *   Demonstrated understanding of research use of special collections
  *   Ability to communicate effectively, orally & in writing
  *   Commitment to valuing diversity & contributing to an inclusive working & learning environment
  *   Ability to exercise independent judgment & take initiative

Opportunities are available for professional development & to engage with the larger field at the local & national levels. Travel & weekend/evening hours occasionally required. Work may include pushing library carts & moving objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
