Dear knowledgeable ARLIS members, especially anyone familiar with photographic archives of newspapers and/or in the greater New York City area,

One of our curatorial staff is researching the Penn Museum's renowned Crystal Sphere<https://www.penn.museum/collections/object/335728> that once had pride of place as art on display in the Wanamaker department store in New York City. He found this intriguing but uncredited photograph that appeared in the Brooklyn Daily Times, December 5, 1924, p. 34. He hopes for a better image from the original print or negative as well as any information about the photographer, occasion, and - dare we hope? - individuals shown in the photo.

I recommended that, in case the Wanamaker store contributed the photo for use by the newspaper, he check with the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, which holds the John Wanamaker collection and other materials related to various family members and the business. A reverse image search does not find other sources. Does anyone know if the photographs from the newspaper, Eastern Brooklyn Daily Times/Brooklyn Daily Times/Brooklyn Times-Union/The Standard Union (Brooklyn), are archived somewhere? Or have other suggestions?

For anyone who is passionate about quartz crystal objects and close to Philly on April 1: Steve Lang, Lyons Keeper of Collections in the Asian Section at Penn Museum, and Jeffrey Post, Curator of the U.S. National Gem and Mineral Collection at the Smithsonian, will be presenting about quartz crystal balls in the collections on Saturday, April 1, 1-3pm, free to registered guests. More information here: https://www.penn.museum/calendar/1486/crystal-balls

Thanks for any leads! Feel free to contact the Penn Museum Asian section staff ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) and/or me off-list.
