One of the most iconic features of Mexico City is its murals dating back to
the 1920s. You will see them as a matter of course when in town for the
ARLIS/NA 51st annual conference at places like the Sanborn restaurant in
Centro Historico (Orozco) and in the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Rivera and
Orozco). But if you are interested in the murals of Mexico, you absolutely
must visit the Secretaría de Educación Pública and the Colegio de San
Ildefonso.

Diego Rivera mural at Secretaría de Educación Pública

The Secretaría is home to 120 Diego Rivera murals painted between 1923 and
1928. This mural cycle investigates the issues most important to
post-revolutionary Mexico like socialism, indigenous cultures, agrarianism,
and industrial revolution. You will find famous artists and politicians
depicted throughout. If you’ve seen the movie Frida, it is at the
Secretaría that Frida first confronts Diego and asks him to assess her
painting. (If you have not seen Frida, you should; it also includes
impressive shots of Teotihuacan.) As it did in the 1920s, the building is
home to the national Department of Education, so while there you will see
office workers going about their day. The murals line three floors of
hallways surrounding impressive courtyards. The murals themselves are
thought-provoking and powerful, but to see them in situ as they were
intended to be seen is a real experience.
I don’t want to oversell, but Tripadvisor

ranks it #3 of 657 in the category “Points of Interest and Landmarks” in
Mexico City.

Courtyard at Secretaría de Educación Pública

The Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso was built as a Jesuit seminary in the
sixteenth century and became a preparatory college in 1857. Today it is a
museum and cultural center; home to murals by José Clemente Orozco, David
Alfaro Siqueiros, Diego Rivera and others. Orozco really steals the show
here; his work encircles the main courtyard. But for you Diego Rivera
lovers, you’ll find his first mural commission aptly named La Creacion.
When I visited last August I was particularly taken with the work of Louis
Henri Jean Charlot and Fernando Leal.
