Job Summary

The Getty Research Institute seeks a service-oriented Special Collections Reading Room (SCRR) Supervisor to manage the day-to-day operations of the very busy Special Collections Reading Room. Reporting to the Head, Research Services, the Special Collections Reading Room Supervisor is in charge of managing the Special Collections Reading Room, Seminar Rooms, and all satellite spaces which host international scholars, staff, researchers, faculty, and visitors. Additionally, the Special Collections Reading Room Supervisor will assist library patrons with various inquiries while always maintaining a high-level of service, working closely and in partnership with librarians, catalogers, library assistants, curators, and registrars.


The ideal Special Collections Reading Room Supervisor candidate will be passionate about the arts, architecture, and visual culture and advancing the mission and goals of the Library and Getty Research Institute. They will foster relationships with staff across the Getty and thrive in assisting researchers to facilitate their work in the extensive collections.


The Getty Research Institute is dedicated to furthering knowledge and advancing awareness of the visual arts and their various histories through its expertise, ongoing collecting program, public programs, institutional partnerships, exhibitions, publications, digital services, and residential scholars' programs. Among the world's premier art libraries, the Getty Library and its Special Collections include over 1.5 million volumes, rare materials, and digital resources, which serve a vast international community of scholars and the interested public. The Institute's activities and scholarly resources guide and sustain each other and collectively provide a unique environment for research, critical inquiry, and scholarly exchange.


Major Job Responsibilities

  • Supervises Special Collections Reading Room staff, workstudy, and occasional interns.
  • May participate in daily operations when required to meet schedules or resolve complex issues.
  • Plans, assigns, and evaluates the work of staff members, provides technical expertise to staff, and establishes and/or monitors current methods and policies.
  • Serves as SCRR expert providing input, recommendations, and expertise to improve Fulfillment workflows in various online library systems.
  • May recommend changes in practices and procedures to increase operating efficiency.
  • Documents performance, provides performance feedback, and formally evaluates the work of employees.
  • Ensures that projects are completed on time following established procedures and schedules.
  • Manages the daily reading room activities and calendar.
  • Ensures proper handling, care, storage, preservation, and tracking of collection items and related duties, daily paging, and re-shelving of collection items.
  • Manages shelf-reading and inventory tasks. Works closely with auditors, department heads, and registrars to ensure proper tracking of all special collections items; produces quarterly audit reports.
  • Directly supervises six full-time employees.
  • May conduct complex collection maintenance as needed.
  • May oversee some reference and reproductions requests.
  • Hosts and facilitates a high volume of classes, workshops, and special tours which number approximately 100 per year.
  • Participates in special events with other sections including reference and curatorial.

Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of lead or supervisory experience in a relevant operation
  • Familiarity with 1 – 2 foreign languages
  • Undergraduate degree in art history or related discipline preferred

  • Thorough knowledge of best-practices and work methods for assigned area
  • Familiarity with integrated library systems. The Getty Library uses the Ex-Libris suite of hosted products: Primo, Alma, and Rosetta.
  • Ability to organize, manage work, and monitor the performance of others
  • Ensures excellent service, friendly reception, and positive research interactions for researchers of all skill levels. Adapts communication style to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to orient and train staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Should be very detail-oriented, flexible, and innovative
