Description

In fulfillment of the library mission to support the museum's current and future collections, scholarly research, exhibitions, publications, programs, and activities; and the archives mission to preserve records that document the origins, development, achievements, and activities of the museum, the Acquisitions and Collection Development Librarian identifies and selects books and other intellectual materials in all languages in accordance with the collection development policy, through relationships with museum curators and other staff, and through established relationships with international vendors. The incumbent manages and disperses acquisition funds for the development of the collection, including endowment and trust funds and general operating funds. The incumbent is a member of the library senior staff and co-manages Technical Services as part of the Technical Services Management Team. The Ingalls Library and Museum Archives serve the museum community by identifying, acquiring, organizing, and providing access to information in accordance with the values of the institution and to fulfill strategic plan and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plan initiatives.

Requirements and Key Competencies

Master's degree in Library Science (MLIS or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program. Knowledge of art historical literature; experience developing and managing relationships with vendors; and working knowledge of at least two foreign languages required, especially German, French, or Italian, as well as a proficiency in using dictionaries for other foreign languages. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Preferred: Master's degree or Ph.D. in art history. Prior experience working in an academic or research library, ideally in an acquisitions department; and proficiency with library systems and OCLC. Demonstrated aptitude for research, communication, management, and collaboration within and beyond one's place of employment.

Responsibilities

  *   Select all materials and oversee collection development, including establishment of book selection policy and criteria for acquisitions based on knowledge of the literature and needs of current and future researchers.
  *   Acquire new materials in all languages from key vendors. Establish, negotiate, and monitor approval plans with vendors, including evaluation of vendor performance, analysis of vendor services, maintenance and analysis of library subject profiles, and evaluation of approval plan materials for relevance to collection.
  *   Select rare and out of print monographs with established vendors; establish new relationships with rare and out of print dealers, vendors, and services as necessary.
  *   Consult with curatorial liaison librarians (Reference and Access Services Librarian and Research and Scholarly Programs Librarian) in the selection of new and rare materials as appropriate.
  *   Contribute to high-level decision-making through attendance at library senior staff meetings.
  *   Supervise and perform all administrative duties related to Library and Archives Associate for Collection Development and Management Services, volunteers, work-study students, and interns by scheduling, prioritizing, organizing, and assigning work; training and evaluating staff; reviewing work in progress.

Salary: $45,000 plus benefits
