SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the University Librarian, the Librarian provides expertise and support in a range of the Library’s service areas. The Librarian provides both in-person and virtual reference/research help services and plans and delivers library instruction sessions. Serving as the liaison to the Faculty of Design + Dynamic Media, the Librarian engages in departmental outreach.


Typical duties associated with this role:

  • Provide in person and virtual reference/research help to students, faculty, and the public.
  • Plan and deliver library instruction to University students and faculty, both in person and online, creating and delivering workshops, orientations and tours.

  • Liaise with teaching faculty to plan and provide library resources and services that support the delivery of University curriculum.

  • Create and/or modify library research guides.

  • Collaborate with subject area librarians to evaluate and recommend discipline-specific materials for the library’s print and electronic collections.

  • Participate in Library, University and consortia committees as required.

  • Advance the values and goals of Reconciliation and ECU’s JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) commitments.

  • Duties may also include overseeing Library operations on assigned weekends and evening shifts, including assuming responsibility for opening and closing the Library, overseeing staff and students, and maintaining a high standard of service.


This is a public-facing position that regularly interacts with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the public. The successful candidate will join a committed team of library professionals and will be expected to be a full participant, along
with the rest of the library team, in the defining and achieving of library goals.


QUALIFICATIONS

A successful candidate will have the following qualifications and/or related experience:
• Master’s degree in Library Science, from an accredited institution required.
• A minimum of two years’ work experience as a professional Librarian, required.
• Undergraduate degree, with a focus in visual art, media, design, or art history strongly preferred.
• Experience providing reference/research help required.
• Experience with planning and delivering library instruction required.
• Demonstrated experience supporting student academic success an asset.
• Active interest or involvement in contemporary arts, design, or media practices an asset.
• Experience liaising with faculty in academic departments an asset.
• Experience with AskAway, a provincial chat virtual reference service, an asset.
• Experience creating and editing online library research guides an asset.
• Experience supervising undergraduate or graduate research assistants, co-op, or practicum students an asset.
• Experience providing copyright support at a post-secondary institution an asset.
• Knowledge of Canadian copyright law and its application in post-secondary environments.
• Knowledge of innovative approaches to providing library instruction and reference/research help.
• Knowledge of information resources related to visual art, media, design, critical studies, and cross-disciplinary subjects, including bibliographic tools and electronic resources.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with faculty, staff, and students across the institution.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Dedication to team development and excellent peer interactions.
• Ability to set priorities in an environment with multiple, simultaneous demands.
• Initiative and ability to work independently.
