Job Summary

Reporting to a Senior Executive, the Senior Manager plans, manages and evaluates collections, programs, services, staffing, budgets, facilities, functional operations and long-range development of the Library, Archives and Research Fellowships Programs (the national research collection on the visual arts in Canada), including the administration of the Research Fellowship Program of the National Gallery of Canada.

This work serves the Gallery’s mandate to undertake research (collection-oriented; project-oriented; discipline-related), to promote knowledge and understanding, and to disseminate information about Gallery collections and art in general, among all Canadians and internationally. The incumbent has a commitment to the principles of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and in creating a positive work environment and culture articulated in in the National Gallery of Canada’s 2021-2026 Strategic Plan, Transform Together


Requirements

  *   Master’s degree in library and information management;
  *   Post-secondary degree in the history of art or closely related discipline in the humanities, or related combination of education and experience;
  *   A minimum of 10 to 15years of gradually increasing responsibilities in an academic or research library;
  *   Knowledge of the bibliographic networks pertinent to the discipline of art history and the mandate of the National Gallery of Canada’s Library and Archives;
  *   Experience managing employees and financial resources;.
  *   Knowledge that is generally attained through a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science or Archival Science with a Degree in Art History, Fine Arts, Museum Studies or other closely related discipline in the humanities or related combination of education and experience;
  *   Requires knowledge of and proven experience with archives and special collections, ideally in a museum or gallery context. Requires knowledge of, and experience using library information and collections management systems;
  *   5 years demonstrated experience managing within a unionized environment including conducting performance appraisals, setting objectives and resolving conflicts;
  *   Requires experience leveraging information technology to meet operational requirements while balancing diverse needs of wider user community of the Library and Archives;
  *   Excellent leadership skills, interpersonal skills, organizational and analytical skills;
  *   Experience creating a work environment aligned with the principles of justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion;
  *   Experience forecasting, monitoring and control budgets;
  *   Knowledge of, and documented experience applying relevant legislation including the Privacy Act, Copyright Act, and the Library and Archives of Canada Act;
  *   Diplomatic and efficient interpersonal skills for telephone or face to face interaction;
  *   Knowledge of museology and cultural sector;
  *   Knowledge of fine arts, art history, artists, trends, and Canadian cultural policies;
  *   Knowledge of notably Library and Archives Policies including Collections Development, Research, and Information Management;\
  *   Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines;
  *   Knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook.

Assets

  *   Master of Archival Studies/ MA Archival Studies/ Master of Information Archives Concentration;
  *   Knowledge of current approaches to decolonizing collections management, experience working with these approaches;
  *   Knowledge of Gallery policies and procedures.
