Hi Eric:

This is very good news from the CAA.  But it brings to mind an issue about which museum librarians were very concerned a few years ago: AAM accreditation.  It used to be the case that AAM accreditation guidelines did not mention libraries at all.  I have just quickly gone through the “Core Standards” on the AAM website and although there is mention of “documentation” and “scholarly standards,” neither libraries nor archives nor special collections are mentioned specifically.  Is this something that the “CAA Committee on Research and Scholarship” has discussed at all?

Subject: [ARLIS-L] CAA STATEMENT ON THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL RESEARCH COLLECTIONS

Dear ARLIS/NA Community,

I am pleased to report that the College Art Association has adopted a "Statement on the Importance of Physical Research Collections". The CAA Committee on Research and Scholarship, which I co-chaired, and of which ARLIS/NA member Emily Walz was also a member, proposed this statement which was ratified by the Board of the CAA in November 2022 and posted on the CAA website last week. It is available here, in the Standards & Guidelines section of the website: https://www.collegeart.org/standards-and-guidelines/guidelines/physical-research-collections

Founded in 1911, the CAA promotes excellence in scholarship and teaching in the visual arts. It is the oldest and largest support organization for those working in the visual arts.

Please feel free to use this statement in any way that may be helpful to your library and provide links to it wherever they may be helpful.

Sincerely,

Eric M. Wolf
