Position Description

Performs complex professional and administrative functions in the operation of a specialized section in the library; must cooperate and function as part of a team to provide services to all library users.  This is an entry-level rank assigned to those beginning their professional careers or those, who upon their appointment, do not meet the criteria of Associate Librarian. Work is performed under general supervision with latitude for individual initiative and judgment. Evaluation is based upon accomplishment of defined objectives. May supervise various technical and clerical library employees.

Ranked among the top third of academic research libraries nationally, Texas Tech University Libraries serve as a vital partner with students and faculty in their learning endeavors.The University Libraries' system is comprised of: (1) University Library, (2) Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library, and the (3) Architecture Library. The University Library is a patent and trademark depository and is one of two regional depositories for U.S. government documents in Texas. The central focus of the Texas Tech University Libraries is to make available 3.72 million physical volumes, electronic resources, special collections, and archives, and to offer services to students and faculty that enable academic and research success.


Major/Essential Functions

  • Work collaboratively with the Architecture Library team, User Centered Services Unit, and other Libraries departments to support branch operations and services.
  • Oversee department scheduling for staff and student assistants; serve as a backup in the absence of the Senior Library Associate.
  • Oversee reference training of staff and student assistants.
  • Contribute to the planning and teaching of information literacy modules in support of the College of Architecture program and curriculum.
  • Maintain and analyze pertinent statistics related to circulation, reference, and instructional services
  • Contribute to the curation of web content and subject-based online resource tools (LibGuides, handouts, tutorials).
  • Serve as the primary contact for the College of Architecture El Paso campus to support access, instruction, and services for distance students and faculty.
  • Follow and uphold policies and procedures of the Libraries and the University; implement and assess internal policies in conjunction with USCU for the betterment of services.
  • Serve as one of two Emergency Action Coordinators for the Architecture Library.
  • Serve on committees and teams as assigned.

The Architecture Public Services Librarian is a member of the Texas Tech University Libraries faculty whose responsibilities include actively pursuing academic publishing, professional development, instruction, and service to the Libraries, University, and community.

Candidates who have very strong records of scholarship supported by extramural funding and who have the proven capacity or clear potential to bring externally sponsored research to Texas Tech University are encouraged to apply.  Service duties include program-building, as well as a commitment to extra-curricular activities. Service to the department, college, university, and community is expected.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Subject expertise and/or degree in architecture, art, or a related field.
  • Knowledge and understanding of public services functions, best practices, and current trends in an academic library setting.
  • 1 to 3 years of successful supervisory experience.
  • Information literacy teaching and instruction assessment experience.
  • Competencies using integrated library systems (Alma).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse population of faculty, staff, student, and community members.
  • Strong service orientation.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and first-generation students is highly desirable.
