The IDSVA Librarian is a faculty-equivalent appointee who provides a wide range of professional services in the low-residency PhD program, in support of its research, teaching, and educational missions. The librarian oversees the development and management of a completely digital library, including reference and interlibrary loan services, to meet the curricular needs and accreditation requirements for remote learning and PhD research. The Librarian is in charge of developing collection and services that support student and faculty research.  The IDSVA Librarian is a faculty-equivalent appointee who provides a wide range of professional services in the low-residency PhD program, in support of its research, teaching, and educational missions. The librarian oversees the development and management of a completely digital library, including reference and interlibrary loan services, to meet the curricular needs and accreditation requirements for remote learning and PhD research. The Librarian is in charge of developing collection and services that support student and faculty research.  This is a remote position, with the occasional participation in on-site residencies. Fluency in using video platforms and digital communication technology is a must.Salary range: $ 20-25K, based on an average of 15 hours per week.


Key Accountabilities

  • Collection Management Activities: Develops and manages the IDSVA Library collection and resources, including JStor, ARTStor, Project Muse and other digital catalogs. S/he maintains and assures partnership with the affiliated Maine State Library for interlibrary loan services and the archival of dissertations, and assures resources support teaching and research programs across IDSVA. 
  • Administrative Duties: Provides and annual report for the Library. Accesses and provides use statistics and creates online resources as needed. Consults with the Director of the School and faculty about new resources for the library. Meets regularly with the Director of the School and attends faculty and administrative meetings as needed. Insures the IDSVA Library supports the mission of the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts. 
  • Educational Services: Provides educational and instructional activities and resources to all faculty and students. Able to provide in person workshops, online assistance, answer email queries, as well as provide video tutorials and handouts. Provide research support appointments online or by phone.
  • Outreach, Marketing and Publicity: Develops and maintains a working rapport with IDSVA faculty, students and consortial colleagues. Plans, participates in and evaluate a program of library services that meets their teaching and research needs. Keeps faculty and staff informed of issues and new developments in the library and information fields.
  • Professional Development: Stays informed on developments in academic librarianship and in the disciplines of art and theory. Maintains an awareness of new technologies, services and issues through professional reading and participation in national and regional professional organizations.
  • Technology: Plans, implements, administers, and evaluates the library’s online presence. Keeps current with changing technologies and regularly assesses the user experience online to insure a high level of access for all students and faculty. 
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others. Communicates effectively with a diverse user population and is sensitive to the varying needs of a diverse community.
  • Performs other duties assigned.

Qualifications

  • Education: MLS accredited degree.Subject expertise or additional degree in appropriate subject area. Knowledge of Microsoft Office & web design are a plus.
  • Experience: Two or more years in a library setting. Demonstrated managerial experience in a library or equivalent setting.
  • Skills & Knowledge: Strong interpersonal skills; the ability to work collegially in a team environment. Strong commitment to outreach and user services. Demonstrated experience and enthusiasm in providing educational services. Demonstrated capacity to foster and manage change in a fast-paced environment. Understanding of digital technologies and their application in service to users. Commitment to serving the needs of a diverse population.

IDSVA’s pioneering curriculum—fusing distance learning with intensive residencies—allows art professionals and creative thinkers to pursue rigorous advanced scholarship without having to interrupt or abandon their teaching careers, art practice, or other professional responsibilities. Our mission is to operate a school of graduate studies providing education in philosophy, aesthetics, art theory, and similar disciplines related to the visual arts.
