Please join us this Wednesday, December 14 from 1:00-2:00 PM EST for the latest installment of
Work/Cited, a program series showcasing the latest scholarship supported by The New York Public Library's rich collections with a behind-the-scenes look at how the finished product was inspired, researched, and created.
In
episode 21, NYPL's Madeleine Viljoen will be joined by Dr. Bette Talvacchia, art historian and Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor Emerita at the University of Connecticut. They will discuss Talvacchia's book
The Two Michelangelos (Lund Humphries, 2021). The book explores the significant yet little-discussed connection between Michelangelo Buonarrotti and Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (hence "the two Michelangelos"), exposing the dynamic relationship between their work by examining how Caravaggio creatively responded to the art of his namesake from the start of his youthful arrival in Rome. The two will discuss Talvacchia's research into the similar 'artistic temperaments' constructed in the biographies of each artist — accounts that glorify their rebellious, anti-social behavior and uncompromising artistic principles — and consider why the artists' stories remain so compelling to us today.
Registration and additional information can be found at the
event webpage.
