Cecilia was was my first supervisor when I started working at the Ryerson & Burnham Libraries as a teenager. She was an adult so she seemed much older, but I imagine she couldn't be much more than 10 or 15 years older than me. What a survivor: to last through all the turmoil at the Smithsonian over the years. I kept in touch after she retired and she always wanted to hear what was new and to gossip. The best Chinese meal I ever had was when she escorted a small group of us to a restaurant in Chinatown in SF during that conference and did all the ordering. She will be missed.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Cecilia Chin's passing

Hi all,

Another sad note, to share that former SAAM librarian Cecilia Chin passed peacefully on October 22nd, 2022. She was living in a nursing home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and cared for by a niece.

Cecilia had been the Head Librarian for the Smithsonian American Art and Portrait Gallery Library from 1982 until her retirement in 2010. She came to DC from the Art Institute of Chicago’s Ryerson & Burnham libraries. Between her retirement and her move to Michigan, she was an active docent for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art.

There have not been public arrangements announced, but because of her time in DC, the family will likely hold a memorial in DC in the summer.

Anne
