Dear ARLIS Friends:

Here are a few books about Frida Kahlo (and, of course, about Diego Rivera and their various artistic circles) that I loved reading.  Both the Barbezat and Reef books include many photographs of her family, friends, and lovers as well as of the Casa Azul and color plates of her paintings.  I hope that when you go to Mexico City, with or without ARLIS, you will go to Frida’s house, the Casa Azul (the Blue House), which is the Frida Kahlo Museum in Coyoacan, an upscale neighborhood in Mexico City.  I was able to visit two times in the last few years, each time more enchanting than the last.  Even if you can’t go with an ARLIS group, do go—just DON’T go on Sunday—too crowded.  Allow plenty of time to see the paintings and photographs and the wonderful rooms in the house that are as she left them—the bedrooms, the kitchen, her studio (which includes her library) and the wonderful gardens.  Yes, it is a tourist attraction, but it is so much more!

Barbezat, Suzanne.  Frida Kahlo at Home.  London: Frances Lincoln Ltd., 2016.

Lozano, Luis-Martin.  Frida Kahlo.  Boston: Bulfinch Press/Little, Brown and Co., 2001.

Reef, Catherine.  Frida & Diego: Art, Love, Life.  Boston: Clarion Books, 2014.

Best wishes, Joan

This was exciting to see on the NY Times site today! I've recently read two other books that take place in Mexico City ("Velvet Was the Night" by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and "More Than You'll Ever Know" by Katie Garcia) -- and now I'm interested in diving into some of this author's recommendations as well:
