Position Description


Reporting to the Head of Library, the Technical Services Librarian develops and deploys systems and services for library technical operations to optimally deliver research resources to the staff and public. This position also provides critical public-facing services, including assisting patrons, performing tours and orientations, and promoting library collections and services. In addition, this position is primarily responsible for performing high quality original and copy cataloging.


Responsibilities

  • Efficiently and accurately perform standardized original and copy cataloging of library resources; create authority records through the Art NACO program; provide leadership in evaluation and application of current and emerging cataloging standards; develop creative ways to utilize the library's bibliographic database
  • Provide a key public interaction point for library patrons by serving at the reference desk and answering research requests from staff, advanced scholars, and the public; give tours and orientations covering library, archives, and special collections; provide library system and research database instruction; support with public events in the library in collaboration with the Museums Education Department
  • Facilitate sharing and discovery of the library collections through the museums website and other distribution and discovery systems; work to harmonize metadata application with other museum research resources, including archives and special collections
  • Play a key role in the creation and management of library digital collections (both born-digital and digitized), including technical specifications, workflows, metadata application, preservation, and quality control
  • Create and maintain documentation of cataloging policies and procedures
  • Contribute to staffing public hours in the Library
  • Manage the library's resource sharing (interlibrary loan) program
  • Manage integrated library system circulation, serial check-in, and cataloging functions
  • Coordinate with TCU library systems department to manage integrated library system updates, troubleshooting, and documentation; serve as the OCLC technical representative
  • Working with the Head of the Research Library, collaborate cross-departmentally to activate the library as an engaging public space
  • Manage the physical processing of library materials and assist with processing library acquisitions
  • Collaborate with the Head of the Research Library to establish departmental policies and procedures; assist with strategic planning and budgeting
  • Support promotion and help build awareness of the library's collections and services as resource for college and university students and faculty
  • Participate in professional organizations and actively share with colleagues as part of a continuing commitment to ensure alignment with best professional practices
  • Assist with gathering and reporting library statistics, including collecting system-generated statistics and providing management and statistical reports on systems operations
  • Assist with preservation of library materials
  • Assist with managing library collection storage
  • Assist with disposition of duplicate and out of scope materials
  • Maintain confidentiality of museum information
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position supervises volunteers, interns, and practicum students, when applicable.

Skills and Requirements

  • Proficiency applying RDA cataloging standard to print and digital resources using MARC; familiarity with AACR2 and pre-AACR standards; knowledge of rare book cataloging methodologies
  • Experience applying Library of Congress subject headings; familiarity with other subject-specific controlled vocabularies such as the Library of Congress Thesaurus for Graphic Materials and the Art and Architecture Thesaurus
  • Experience applying Library of Congress Classification
  • Experience using MARC-based authority records and familiarity with RDA authority record creation
  • Thorough knowledge of metadata standards related to digital library and archives collections such as Dublin Core, MODS, METS, and EAD
  • Familiarity with OCLC systems and services, including Connexion and WorldShare Interlibrary Loan
  • Strong technology skills, including familiarity with integrated library system software (Ex Libris Aleph preferred), digital library systems, database systems, digital repository software, cloud-based systems, and digitization/imaging technologies
  • Experience manipulating library and archives metadata, and knowledge of tools and procedures for data transformation and migration
  • High level competency employing print and online resources in art history and the humanities
  • Knowledge of preservation standards and methodologies for both print and digital resources.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate effectively to both technical and non-technical users.
  • Ability to present/participate in outreach programs that promote the use of the library
  • Ability to prioritize work to ensure that goals are achieved.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Ability to lift and move boxes up to 40 pounds; ability to climb ladders.

Qualifications/Education
