ABSTRACT

Imagining Mexican Art & Architecture

The mention of Mexico City conjures certain iconic images to mind: an aerial view of the Palacio de Bellas Artes at dusk or sunlight striking a corner Luis Barragán’s house near the Bosque Chapultepec, the carefully-arranged interiors of Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul or the pre-hispanic sculptural fragments of the Templo Mayor. In addition to photographing these well-known sites in the capital, nineteenth and twentieth-century photographers like Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Judith Sandoval, and Enrique Cervantes documented the art and architecture of Mexico. Works of art in their own right, these photographs also serve as important resources for art historical studies.

This session invites participants to explore photographic collections in North America that document Mexican art and architecture, with particular emphasis on Mexico City. Papers may explore the acquisition, processing, or presentation (either digital or physical) of images as well as documentation related to photographers, architects, artists, and scholars. The session will be bi-lingual, and proposals in both English and Spanish are welcome.
