Are you knowledgeable about key movements, techniques and significant figures in art history? Would you like to share your interest in those subjects with others? Would you enjoy working with a diverse audience with interests ranging from local graffiti artists to Impressionist painters, from letterboxing to antique collecting? Are you interested in developing dynamic, informative and unique programs for a wide audience?

Central Library has an opening for a full-time librarian in the Fine Arts department where you will serve in that role and so much more! Our ideal candidate is someone who is enthusiastic, creative, patient, and committed to providing excellent customer service. This person must be passionate about working with the public and providing technology-related assistance.


In this role you will:

  *   Provide in-depth reference assistance for customers via face-to-face, email, electronic, and telephone interactions, including locating items in the catalog or on shelf, assisting with database use, and looking up information

  *   Develop and present Library programs related to the department’s collections, including book clubs, author and artist events, and programs developed in collaboration with community members

  *   Maintain and promote the Library’s robust collection of circulating and reference materials, serials, and more, including weeding and evaluating those collections

  *   Conduct outreach in the community

  *   Collaborate with Library colleagues at Central and throughout the system on projects, programs, and committees

  *   Work closely with Rare Books and Manuscripts staff to assist customers with the Steedman Architecture Room

  *   Create book displays and lists for the Library website highlighting aspects of the Fine Arts collection in connection with current happenings and in support of Library programming

  *   Perform circulation-related duties in the department and elsewhere as needed

  *   Prepare monthly report using collected statistics

  *   Ensure customers are following library policies, and help contribute to a safe environment

Job requirements include:

  *   Master of Library Science, Master’s in Fine Arts, or equivalent; or four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

  *   Strong communication, writing, and speaking skills

  *   Strong organizational skills

  *   Computer skills and knowledge of:

     *   Google Workspace (Google Docs, Sheets, Gmail)

     *   Windows 10

  *   Knowledge of or willingness to learn to use:

     *   Digital reference tools

     *   Social media platforms

     *   Zoom and Google Meet platforms

     *   BiblioCommons catalog software

     *   Polaris Leap ILS web client

     *   Digital library applications (Overdrive, Hoopla, Freegal)

Hours for this position are:

40 hours/week: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 9-6, Tuesday 11-8, alternating Friday and Saturday 8-5 & every 3rd Sunday 1-5; on weeks with a Sunday shift, those 4 hours are offset during the following week. (Hours are subject to change and weekend flexibility is required)
