Good day,

Back in March, LC deleted the heading Art, Primitive and directed that it can be replaced with Art, Prehistoric (DLC)sh 85007853 and Art (DLC)sh 85007461. For libraries that utilize Ex Libris Alma's authority updating process, Backstage Library Works metadata processing, or other automated LCSH linking, it is likely that the heading "Art, Primitive" has been unlinked and now the main heading is simply "Art". ("Sculpture, Primitive" and "Architecture, Primitive" were also deleted similarly.)

Removing the objectionable and inaccurate word "primitive" from these headings is the right thing to do. However, what remains on many records (i.e. “Art”) is so general as to be unhelpful. Possible alternative headings, depending on content, include Art, Prehistoric or Art, Indigenous. What approaches, if any, is your library taking to reviewing the changed headings and applying a more appropriate and accurate one?

Many thanks,
Sarah
