Hey ARLIS/NA,

I wanted to follow up that this summer we will host a virtual reading group. This will be an opportunity for us to move forward our speculative practices while getting to know one another.

We'll read Sasha Costanza-Chock’s Design Justice: Community-Led Practices to Build the Worlds We Need

"An exploration of how design might be led by marginalized communities, dismantle structural inequality, and advance collective liberation and ecological survival."

The book is freely available online or in print from MIT Press or perhaps your library.

There are seven chapters. We'll read one chapter a week and use email for discussion, initiated with prompts from the week's chapter. Then, we'll have two virtual meetups to continue conversation and networking.

Here is the weekly schedule. Meetup dates and times will be set closer to the date.

6/12 Introduction

6/19 Design Values

6/26 Design Practices

7/3 reading break / meetup

7/10 Design Narratives

7/17 Design Sites

7/24 Design Pedagogies

7/31 Directions for Future Work

8/7 meetup

This is low stakes, no pressure participation! If you miss a week, no problem! If you skim read or just skip to the comments, welcome!

If you are interested in participating, please email Shannon at [log in to unmask] by Wednesday, June 8. Please feel free to share this invitation, or the sign up for our group

Take care,
Shannon Robinson, Heidi Beke-Harrigan, and John Jung

Subject: [ARLIS-L] new listserv for speculative design and libraries

Hello ARLIS/NA!

Many of you have participated in or shown interest in our speculative design and libraries work, most recently at our annual conference workshop Creating Radical Hope: Artistic and Speculative Library Responses to Climate Change.

We want to continue the conversation!

We’re creating a Google Group to occasionally share information about speculative design, futures thinking (especially related to climate change), and libraries. We’ll also use it as a platform to post calls for proposals and to find collaborators for new projects and papers.

Curious? Register your preferred email. Once you are added to Google Group, you can manage your subscription settings.

Our next shared effort will be a virtual reading group for Sasha Costanza-Chock’s Design Justice: Community-Led Practices to Build the Worlds We Need. The book is freely available online or in print from MIT Press or perhaps your library. Details to follow soon, on the Google Group listserv.

We are also committed to publishing a climate change and libraries zine! A call for submissions will follow soon.

Take care,

Shannon (and Heidi and John)
