Art & Design Librarian - OCAD University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Apply Reporting to the University Librarian, the Art & Design (A&D) Librarian serves as a liaison librarian in support of discipline specific departments and subject areas in art and design. The Librarian supports collection management, curriculum and course integrated instruction, innovative reference services, and research activities for all faculty and students. This includes production of research and course guides, videos, and Canvas modules and learning objects, to support the curriculum. The A&D Librarian is also responsible for co-managing the library’s Distinctive Collections (video collection, rare books, material library) with the University Librarian, and leading outreach, instruction, and engagement for these collections. The A&D Librarian participates in collections assessment, quality assurance, and analysis throughout the academic year. The Librarian is part of a team of service oriented and collaborative librarians and supports learning, scholarship, creative and artistic activities through building collections and delivering a program of outreach, engagement, teaching, and consultation in the art & design disciplines.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Collection Development and Management

  *   Serve as a liaison to the faculty in the Faculties of Art & Design (i.e., develop and maintain appropriate departmental contacts to identify reserve items and materials to be added to the collection; assist with incorporating informational resources into the curriculum; participate in collection management, weeding, preservation, and related projects for print, digital, and e-collections, etc.)

  *   Serve as liaison to additional departments/programs, as applicable

  *   Oversee the library’s Distinctive Collections (i.e. rare books, zines, artists’ books, video collection, material library) in collaboration with the University Librarian, through collection development, preservation, outreach, and engagement

  *   Monitor, track and report on assigned budgets for liaison departments, generate quarterly variance reports by department or program area, and ensure timely spend out

  *   Oversee special and ongoing projects related to the maintenance and integrity of the art and design collection, including assessment and quality assurance processes to complete library reports as required and requested

  *   Contribute to the library's social media accounts, and library newsletter as requested

  *   Participate in grant writing and development activities to seek outside funding sources for the library

  *   Working with the Assistant University Librarian and Alternate Formats Coordinator, support the development of the library’s instance of Material Order material library, through faculty liaison outreach and engagement.

  *   Plan, develop, and curate library exhibitions from existing library collections, and develop related programming

  *   Develop processes and templates to streamline collection and reporting of relevant metrics

  *   Produce and present library reports for cyclical reviews of programs, major program revisions, and new program applications

  *   Build and manage library curriculum-driven collections to meet the needs of students and faculty with a commitment to creating an inclusive collection; spend allocated collection development funds in a timely and responsible manner

  *   Revise and update the collection development policy, as needed, to ensure currency

  *   Communicate information about library policies and promote library services to faculty and students

Reference and Liaison

  *   Participate with other librarians in developing innovative reference and outreach services, in person and virtual; working weekly scheduled reference shifts, including some evening and weekend shifts each month

  *   Participate in the library liaison program: for assigned departments conduct collection development and management of related library materials in all relevant formats, including deselection and preservation decisions; perform library instruction sessions in library spaces, classroom spaces, and/or asynchronously; develop and send regular communications about new services and collections; complete ECM and IQAP reports for cyclical reviews and course/program modifications

  *   Actively advance the Libraries’ foundational commitment to research education, library instruction, in support of teaching and learning on campus

  *   Assist with the development of print and web-based informational materials, including content for the Library’s web-pages, LibGuides, course pages in Canvas, etc., in collaboration with other librarians with liaison duties

  *   Plan and deliver information literacy and bibliographic instruction, library orientations and research workshops to individuals and groups inside the Library and Learning Zone and in classroom/studio environments, in collaboration with faculty and Librarians

  *   Create teaching and learning support materials such as tutorials, videos and research guides and contribute to the overall web presence of the library

Other

  *   Participate in policy development, the establishment of procedures, and in the documentation, assessment and planning of library services, including the collection, and reporting out of statistics monthly

  *   Serve on internal and external committees, as required

  *   Participate in professional activities outside the University

  *   Collaborate with other librarians and library staff on related projects, and other library initiatives when called upon by the University Librarian

  *   Supervise the work of interns and student monitors, as needed

  *   Collect and maintain data, metrics, statistics related to your position and duties, recording these monthly on the library’s shared Excel workbook

  *   Participate in the weekly service desk schedule, including evening and weekend shifts as required

  *   Support the University Librarian in related duties that contribute to the successful operation of Library Services

Qualifications:

  *   Master’s degree in an ALA-accredited library and information science program

  *   Master’s degree in the History of Art, or History of Design

  *   Demonstrated knowledge of art history research methods

  *   Minimum of three (3) years of related work experience, in a post-secondary academic library, preferred

  *   In-depth knowledge of print and electronic resources in visual arts and design

  *   Knowledge of, or an interest in using Jstor Forum to manage image assets and metadata

  *   Knowledge of copyright issues as related to academic librarianship and library information and scholarship

  *   Experience, or interested in, creating online user guides and educational resources

  *   Experience in, or interested in learning, conversion and formatting of digital objects, and metadata creation and quality control

  *   Strong commitment to excellence in public service, reference, instruction, and outreach

  *   Strong interest in current and emerging information technologies and potential applications and opportunities for the library.

  *   Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and collegially with library staff, faculty, and students.

  *   Demonstrated success managing multiple concurrent projects with excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills

  *   Demonstrated ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, in varied work environments with a diverse group of team members and subject matter experts

  *   Demonstrated strong organizational, presentation, interpersonal and communication skills, including creativity, problem solving and the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students

  *   Demonstrated commitment to the principles of equity and diversity and experience promoting a respectful work and learning environment with students, staff and faculty

  *   Must be willing & able to work evening and weekend shifts, as required



Compensation: Hiring Range - $73,662.84 to $84,290.33 per annum, commensurate with experience, plus benefits; Salary Range - $73,662.84 to $96,456.43 per annum.



Hours of Work: Total of 35 hours per week. The incumbent in this role will be expected to report to work on campus.
