Visual Resources Curator - Reed College, Portland, OR

Reed College seeks a collaborative and experienced professional to be our next Visual Resources Curator. The Visual Resources Curator works closely with the faculty in the art department to manage and expand image collections used for teaching and research. This role reports to the art department.

Who You Are

  • You have an ALA accredited Master’s degree in library and information science.

  • You have extensive coursework in art or architectural history.

  • You have at least two years of work experience managing image collections, including experience with image digitization software, hardware, and camera equipment.

  • You have utilized digital asset and content management systems extensively in your work.

  • You have knowledge of digital preservation and storage standards.

  • You are familiar with digitization best practices (FADGI or equivalent).

  • You have experience with image quality control.

  • You have experience with cataloging and metadata schemas for visual culture and art related materials.

  • You seek opportunities for professional development. You are always reading, writing, and connecting with others in order to develop yourself professionally.

  • You like working with college age students. You are a good listener and mentor, and you always set appropriate boundaries.

  • You are self-aware. You understand your own culture, identity, biases, prejudices, power, privilege, and stereotypes.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage all aspects of art image collection, including selection, digitization, cataloging, ingest, and discoverability.

  • Work closely with the art department to set the long term vision (> five years) and short term goals (one to two years) for the collection.

  • Assist faculty colleagues with the integration of digital technologies into teaching and research programs of the art department.

  • Maintain the 35mm slide collection.

  • Supervise approximately seven student workers who assist with managing the collection.

  • Create and update workflow documentation and tutorials.

  • Develop collection metrics and prepare metrics reports for the art department. 

  • Manage the visual resources budget, including preparing annual budget requests and monitoring expenditures.

  • Provide students and faculty of the art department with guidance on the scholarly use of images as related to research, copyright, and visual literacy

  • Ensure the collection is accessible to persons of all abilities.
