Subject: [ARLIS-L] Reformulating the Archaeology & Classics SIG? (Follow-up to SIG meeting on May 5, 2021)

Dear ARLIS/NA Members,

On 5 May 2021 the SIG held a preliminary meeting to present and discuss potential ways forward (minutes attached).
The meeting concluded with an agreement that ARLIS/NA Members should be invited to express their views through a poll.
Please see below the background information and find the survey (1-2 minutes) here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/arlisna_AC_SIGsurvey

Background information:

  1. Recent events, as well as scholarly approaches in some quarters, have challenged the (up till now) key - and ‘respectable’ role that Classics has played in our understanding of ‘Western Civilization’. See, for example:
Racist comments directed at a classics scholar at a disciplinary meeting floor classicists in the room, at the conference and online (insidehighered.com)<https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2019/01/07/racist-comments-directed-classics-scholar-disciplinary-meeting-floor-classicists>

And, so you know that this isn’t just applicable to the US context: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000x72t

  1. Some ARLIS/NA members have noted that ‘Archaeology’ as a discipline applies to more than the ‘ancient and medieval world’ as originally envisaged when establishing this SIG. Archaeologists are actively engaged in excavating and studying cultures from subsequent periods on a worldwide basis.

  1. The Archaeology & Classics SIG was originally conceived as:

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The Archaeology and Classics Special Interest Group is a forum for the discussion of topics relevant to the archaeology and art of the ancient and medieval world.

Possible topics for discussion include developments within the field of art librarianship, new technologies and digital resources for the preservation and dissemination of ancient and medieval art, discovering and communicating developments in adjacent fields to art librarians, and how to communicate to researchers, scholars, and students in adjacent fields what art librarians have to offer them.

STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS

The study of archaeology is often split across several disciplines, including (but not limited to) art history, anthropology, classics, and history. It can be difficult to be well-versed in all these areas as they relate to archaeology in art libraries. The SIG aims to provide a space in which interested librarians can come together to connect and pool their knowledge of ancient and medieval art and archaeology through the following methods:

 ● Fostering communication with professional associations related to the art and archaeology of the ancient and mediaeval world (such as AIA, SCS, SAA, AAA, etc.), both to promote our own work as librarians and learn and communicate about developments in their field, through active engagement with their blogs, social media, and/or conferences.

● Fostering collaborations with ARLIS/NA members and peer librarians in other professional organizations.

● Encouraging SIG members to develop small research projects in coordination with each other and present work at meetings of ARLIS/NA and other relevant professional organizations.

● Working to curate a list of relevant organizations and resources.

  1. The SIG, as currently formulated, has seen very little action in recent years. Is it time for a re-think?

We look forward to your contribution to this discussion and thank you for your participation.
