Dear All,
After 34 years as director of the Athenaeum, the gifted Erika Torri will retire on June 30, 2022. During that time she has transformed the Athenaeum from a quiet, strictly local music and art library into one of the most vibrant cultural treasures in Southern California. Its programs include monthly exhibitions, classical and jazz concerts, lectures, an art school with two campuses, social events, and participation in a program of local murals (one of the best of which faces my office window). See https://www.muralsoflajolla.com <https://www.muralsoflajolla.com/>
The Athenaeum’s main location, in the center of La Jolla, is one of the two or three prettiest buildings in the Village. Its large satellite building, twenty miles away in downtown San Diego, is called Bread & Salt. A repurposed bakery, it houses part of the art school and certain events.
The Athenaeum collections include: art books and periodicals; music books, scores, and recordings, as well as films and other DVDs. Erika is and has been a champion of artists’ books from the beginning. A major concentration of them comprises a significant part of the Athenaeum’s holdings. As the library has completed an artist’s oeuvre in the book arts, it has issued a little catalogue raisonné for each. Eight have appeared, so far: Ed Ruscha , Ida Applebroog, Allen Ruppersberg, Bruce Nauman, John Baldessari, Roberta Allen, Allan Kaprow, and Mel Bochner. Sol LeWitt and an expanded version of Ed Ruscha are in progress.
The Athenaeum was founded in 1899 as the La Jolla Library Association by five or six local ladies who liked to read. It is one of seventeen non-profit subscription libraries remaining in the country. Benjamin Franklin established the model. Among the others are the Boston Athenaeum, the New York Society Library, and the Mechanics’ Institute, in San Francisco. Admission to the library and exhibitions is free to all. Memberships, starting at $35 for an individual, include borrowing privileges and admission free or at reduced cost to special events.
