Good morning, all!

As a reminder, we are holding an ARLIS/NA Town Hall on the topic of Land Acknowledgements tomorrow morning at 11AM EST / 8AM PST. Zoom details are below.

Has your own institution or organization worked with indigenous communities directly to create acknowledgements or agreements? We still have space for 1-2 more speakers! These presentations should be short and informal (5-10 minutes each), and are intended to share ideas and perspectives. If you’re interested, please let me know directly.

Agenda:

  *   Introductions
  * Overview of some general land acknowledgement processes and recommendations (Stephanie Grimm)
  *   Presenters:
     * Amy Furness, Art Gallery of Ontario
     * Jane Devine Mejia, University of British Columbia
     *   TBD?
  * Discussion session: Attendees will move into small breakout groups to address questions and share ideas and resources.

The first portion of this session featuring the presentations will be recorded, but group discussions and breakouts will not. However, we will collect notes and resources in a document to be shared after the event.

We hope to see you there!

Best,
Stephanie Grimm

Subject: Save the date: Land Acknowledgements Town Hall (2/24)
Dear colleagues,

Please join us on Thursday, February 24 from 11AM-12PM EST/ 8AM-9AM PST for a virtual town hall on the subject of land acknowledgements. Zoom links and details are below.

In September 2020, the ARLIS/NA Executive Board adopted a policy to support the performance of land acknowledgements<https://secure-web.cisco.com/13lx67tGKY8Y2cC8RRF-5uqEeg5yh0PedNgyZb3Wq4FSVNO5328NRbSyas0C8bULuQcKz5V0_2C9Ix0RRZyJXOPk4RuD8TbygiW-eEWlRPbgsYnv7bh0BdCLN1FchvL6dDw2kezPrdk3bEL8Y3yi8Im3dYmSzl2UsZEQMri3utKzTM6w18sfhXZDgnIltQmC6D04zXGBoRrYYus7iQfMzqv_cDL7p3sKMuSH-VtpGI5U3syJNoR_7P2vapfSFcoEIhIorhT2yKu6M47__HnJJDONOEqs98dJjGGPdo7_uZFGNT8WPiVMZGmuO-SEsvHltaOXCbvlZAxvWH_qOSlD4nbc4hSH3qkY9bUrFl-m8xprL3OwBbo3P-t5yF0tNY901GiSDeAMfF6_fhxXWIYFNu-AnzLaSX1BiWVHclALTl6ha1r_EcHEZud-HLatkU9b6/https%3A%2F%2Fwww.arlisna.org%2Ffile%2Fsecure%2Farlisnapolicymanual.pdf%23page%3D87%26zoom%3D100%2C38%2C285> at the annual conference and encouraged the same for chapters and other groups in the society. What comes after this step, and how can we work together to ensure that the preparation and performance of land acknowledgements remains an active practice that goes beyond perfunctory readings?

To open this session, we will hear from volunteers from various ARLIS/NA constituent groups, including the Diversity & Inclusion Committee and the Canada Chapter, about their practices and activities. We invite members, particularly those who self-identify as Indigenous, to contribute their perspectives. Please reach out to Stephanie Grimm<mailto:[log in to unmask]> (ARLIS/NA Chapters Liaison) or Mark Pompelia<mailto:[log in to unmask]> (ARLIS/NA President) if you would like to speak briefly or share written comments.

This session provides space for chapter leaders and other members to ask questions, share resources, and discuss their experiences. After hearing from individual speakers, attendees will have time for small-group discussions. By offering this town hall in advance of the annual conference, we hope that attendees will leave with ideas or actions for their chapters and groups.

While only the formal presentations may be recorded, we will share collected resources and notes following the discussion.

This event is organized in collaboration with the Diversity & Inclusion Committee, with special thanks to Chloe Bragg, Amy Furness, Jane Devine Mejia, and Heather Slania.

We hope to see you there!
