Associate Director, Reference and Public Services - Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Beverly Hills, CA

Description 

The Associate Director, Reference and Public Services administers the activities of the Reference and Public Services department, including advising patrons and staff in the selection and use of library materials related to film and the performing arts. You will supervise the library's digital studio team, reading room services (including reference, reception, and paging), and be responsible for the development of the reference collection. You will also be responsible for the library's exhibition loans program, overseeing both internal and external loan requests.


Responsibilities:

  • Manage and participate in reference and in-depth research services provided by the department's staff.
  • Manage the training and supervision of reference and public services support staff, providing support and guidance for a team with a broad range of responsibilities while maintaining a cohesive and collaborative department.
  • Analyze and solve problems related to reference, loans, and digitization services.
  • Set and implement policies and procedures for reference, public services, and loans.
  • Apply creative solutions to developing and improving practices and procedures.
  • Maintain and share expert knowledge of reference-related activities and trends.
  • Provide bibliographic instruction and outreach to Academy staff and the public.
  • Plan and conduct library tours, both in person and virtually.
  • Contribute to indexing of articles from print and online sources for reference files.
  • Participate in wider Academy projects as needed, including after-hours events.
  • Guide all activities of the Reference and Public Services department including e-reference, phone and desk reference services, reception and service desk operations, digitization and loan requests.
  • Administrative duties including staff scheduling, reference portal management, and maintaining and updating the library's website.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Film Studies strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years library work experience, including 3-5 years in reference service management.
  • Demonstrated expertise in film, film history, media studies, and the film industry.
  • Supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to supervise a diverse group in a positive and constructive manner.
  • Experience working with web development tools, web interfaces, and library systems, especially LibGuides. Expert knowledge of online reference resources.
  • Exemplary communication skills and service orientation with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with the public and staff.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to be self-motivated, balance multiple projects, and effectively set priorities while maintaining meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to lift storage boxes weighing 25lbs on and off shelves and five-drawer filing cabinets.
  • Must be available to work evenings and Saturdays as needed.
