Yes, it was Clifton’s, and the year was 1985.  --Joan

What sad news. I am fairly sure that Herb was among the dozen or so people who attended a pre-ARLIS meeting at the San Francisco Public Library. Judy Hoffberg organized the meeting, and Mary Ashe hosted it. Among those present were Kate Steinitz, Philip Pacey (founder of the original ARLIS in Britain), Roger Gardiner from Canada, and the Contessa—Alessandro Marchi of Centro Di, the most glamorous creature some of us had ever met. If anyone reading this also was there, please refresh my memory.

If it was not there that I first met Herb, it could have been during a beastly hot meeting of the ALA in Las Vegas about the same time.

The last time probably was Minneapolis, 2011, when we spent a good hour talking about his work in progress, "Streamlined."

Rest in peace, friend.

Sherman, that amazing cafeteria undoubtedly was Clifton's, where my grandmother and I used to lunch on the wonderful occasions when we would take the Hollywood Boulevard streetcar to spend the day downtown. That would have been a first-class draw for Herb.

Herb was also a buff of the quotidian, the funky, the exotic. We went for breakfast at that amazing cafeteria in Los Angeles when the ARLIS/NA conference was held there. Not 1977 (I think), the next one.

Colleagues,

My dear predecessor, former Art/Art History Librarian at the University of Minnesota Libraries, and one of our 10 founders of ARLIS/NA, Herbert Scherer, passed away on December 22, 2021. Please see Herbert Scherer's Obituary.

Herb made many contributions to the University of Minnesota Libraries over the course of 32 years, including securing a very special endowment (Francis V. Gorman Endowment) dedicated to supporting the role of the art librarian and the art books and media collection. He was a scholar and avid researcher with particular interest in Art Deco movie theaters. He donated his research materials (Herbert G. Scherer Movie Theater Research Collection) to the University of Minnesota's Northwest Architectural Archives, after contributing to a public television documentary and curating a University art exhibit on the topic.

Herb, who was 91, is remembered with much fondness and respect. Some of you may recall his love for the once-a-year elegant and expensive dining experiences he sought out when at ARLIS/NA conferences, his love for travel and opera. His ultimate pride and joy was his daughter, Dana Ann.

It is requested that he be remembered by listening to “Méditation, from the opera Thaïs, which touched his heart.” There will be no service, at his request. His wife and daughter survive him, and I hope their memories are a comfort to them. You may read more and share your own memories of Herb on the Star Tribune website.

May his memory be a blessing, Zichronah livrachah. May he rest in peace.

Sincerely,
