▪ Brazilian Institute of Museums (Ibram) mourns the death of plastic artist Sergio Telles, in the early hours of January 24th.

 

A painter and diplomat, Sergio Telles' work includes paintings, drawings, watercolors and prints of urban landscapes, beaches, markets and popular dances.

 

In December 2021, the president of Ibram, Pedro Mastrobuono, visited the artist's studio in São Paulo, when they discussed a retrospective exhibition on the artist's career, as one of the activities commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Week of Modern Art.

Born in 1936 in Rio de Janeiro, Sergio Barcellos Telles participated for the first time in the National Salon of Fine Arts in 1954, holding his first individual exhibition in 1955, in Rio de Janeiro.

 

In 1957, on a tour of Europe, he visited museums in Italy, France, Holland and Portugal, and did an internship in the restoration services of the Vatican's Pinacoteca.

 

In 1964, he entered the diplomatic career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by public tender. As a diplomat, he held several positions in Brazil and in countries such as Portugal, Argentina, Angola, Japan, France, Malaysia, Lebanon, Switzerland and Tunisia.

 

In the 70s, he made drawings and oils, published in book form, with the collaboration of Jorge Amado and Jeanine Warnwood. He is the author of Nivouliès de Pierrefort, published in Buenos Aires by the Museum of Modern Art, 1974; and illustrator from Rio de Janeiro, launched at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, in 1978.

 

His work appears in museums such as the National Museum of Fine Arts / Ibram; the São Paulo Museum of Art (Masp); the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro MAM-Rio; the Carnavalet Museum and the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris; at the Grão Vasco National Museum (Viseu – Portugal), and at the Soares dos Reis National Museum (Porto – Portugal); the Musée du Petit Palais (Geneva – Switzerland); the Museums of Modern Art in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and in Kobe (Japan); the Bridgestone Museum (Tokyo – Japan); the Pouchkine Museum (Moscow – Russia); the Hermitage (St. Petersburg – Russia); the National Gallery of Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia); and at the Museum of the City of Tunis (Tunisia).
