Expand your understanding of book history during a Rare Book School course this summer. Our five-day intensive courses on the history of manuscript, print, and digital materials will be offered online and in person at the University of Virginia and other partner institutions.


Among our thirty-nine courses, we are pleased to offer several pertinent to those interested in art history. The following is a sample of the breadth of the RBS offerings:


— H-155: The History of Artists’ Books since 1950, taught by Tony White (of OCAD University, Toronto)

— B-10: Introduction to the History of Bookbinding, taught by Karen Limper-Herz (of the British Library)

— I-45v: The Photographic Book since 1843, taught by Richard Ovenden (of Oxford University) 

— I-50: Six Hundred Years of Botanical Illustration, taught by Peter Crane (of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation), Roger Gaskell (of Roger Gaskell Rare Books), and Amy Meyers (retired from the Yale Center for British Art)


Course applications will open the week of February 7th. To be considered in the first round of admissions decisions, course applications should be submitted no later than March 7th.
