ClassWeb lists
PN1995.9.B585 as
the correct class number for “African
Americans in motion pictures”. That call number has replaced PN1995.9 .N4.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Critical classification and updating subject subdivisions in call numbers
hello ARLIS,
Does anyone know if there are updates to the Library of Congress call number subject subdivisions for motion pictures? I am classifying a boxed set of DVDs for 'Pioneers
of African-American Cinema'.
I do not have a subscription to Classification Web and the recommended call number in the 092 line of the record is: PN1995.9 .N4. I am not planning to use that subdivision.
The subdivisions in this category are mnemonic and it is useful to use them. For instance, a similar title: 'Pioneers: first women filmmakers' has the call number of:
PN1995.9 .W6 p662 2018.
The subdivision of '.W6' helps our users find a variety of books and DVDs/bluray on the subject of women in film.
I do want to use a subdivision but I do not want to use an antiquated and racist classification.
Is there a current recommendation for a subdivision for African Americans in film that preferably uses a '.A' or another letter that is not derogatory?
