Visual Resource Curator - Providence College, Providence, RI
Providence College seeks a full-time, 12-month visual resource curator in the Department of Art & Art History to assist faculty in their teaching and research needs by overseeing the Visual Resource Center; curating its electronic, digital, and hardware resources; and supervising the VRC’s student staffing.


Primary duties of the position include:

  1.  Assist art history faculty with course preparation and digital resources needs for teaching and research. Keep up to date on new course development and make recommendations on technical services, applications and equipment that may be useful to current and future courses. Assist with technological aspects of student presentations and virtual and digital projects related to coursework in art history and visual communication courses. Manage students assigned as assistants to art history faculty.
  2.  Maintain and expand current visual image collections. Train students to add images to the databases used and to assist faculty from the department and throughout the College when needed.  Keep up to date with new developments in digital resources platforms and hardware and software that may be useful to faculty and staff.  Assist with monitoring and overseeing maintenance of computer hardware, electronic equipment for art history and studio art classrooms and offices, including computers, projection equipment, screens, lecture and presentation devices such as mics and pointers, etc.  Keep abreast of new software and updates especially regarding visual presentations, and databases for art historical research. Be aware of software and hardware used in studio art courses, and assist and advise as necessary.  Advise on new purchases and technological developments that may be useful to department faculty. Maintain, expand and facilitate use of the VRC video, book and journal collection.
  3.  Coordinate with PC Galleries Director and staff to hire, train and manage student workers in the VRC and the Galleries. Maintain department website and social media platforms and supervise student contributions to those platforms. Keep up to date with new technological developments.
  4.  Manage budget allocations for art history supplies. Order supplies submitted by art historians. Coordinate with studio faculty to manage the budget for student technicians.
  5.  Coordinate with the department’s studio technician to assist faculty in studio art with course-related needs and shared space coordination.
  6.  Coordinate with department administrative assistant to maintain and order departmental office equipment and supplies. Assist with departmental events as needed.

The position requires a personable, engaging, service-oriented professional with excellent writing skills. Experience in an educational setting is preferred. Additionally, the ideal candidate would possess skills and expertise and/or willingness and demonstrable ability to quickly learn social media platforms, WordPress, art history image databases and research platforms, digital projection tools and presentation software, Photoshop and basic image manipulation software, image scanning tools and equipment, basic video editing software, Zoom and similar online meeting platforms, digital photography skills and basic camera and photographic equipment knowledge.


BA or BFA required.  Preference will be given to applicants who possess at least an MA in art history, an MFA in studio art, or the equivalent in a related field with relevant experience.  The position includes competitive salary and benefits, as well as some research support including travel funds, library resources, and grant writing assistance. The position reports to the Chair of the Department of Art & Art History.
