Hello ARLISians!
I wanted to share this great lecture being presented by the Seattle Art Museum's Gardner Center for Asian Art and Ideas:
Literary Plunder: The Making and Unmaking of Tipu Sultan's Library
Saturday, November 13 10-11:30am Pacific Time
The library of Tipu Sultan, Sultan of Mysore (r. 1782–99) was once among the richest in South Asia. Amassed largely through plunder, it was plundered in turn by the British East India Company in 1799. In this talk, Joshua Ehrlich, Assistant
Professor at the University of Macau, will describe the ways in which Tipu Sultan and rival factions within the Company used the library to legitimize their rule and what this reveals about the symbolic power literary plunder had and continues to have today.
