This is the long-term goal of several linked data initiatives. Although both works in progress, two that come to mind:

 

American Art Collaborative, a consortium of 14 art institutions in the United States whose browse interface is available in prototype form: http://browse.americanartcollaborative.org

Wikidata, a free and open knowledge base part of the Wikimedia ecosystem where many editors (including several ARLIS/NA members) are contributing data about art museum collections:

Neither should be considered comprehensive, but could be a useful starting point in combination with the Artefacts Canada tool shared by John. Many contemporary artist CVs/biographies will also list institutional collections that hold their work, which can be found on the artist’s website or the website of the gallery representation (see this CV for example, that has collections listed on page 13–14).

A patron asks, “When you are doing a search to see which museum collections hold a specific artistʻs work, are there any standard search engines? Or do I just surf the net?” Does anyone have a response to this question?
