Save the date for the Minitex Technical Services Symposium on November 9, 2021! This year’s theme is Good Trouble: Activism and Ethics in Technical Services

Late Congressman John Lewis encouraged us to get into “good trouble” - making waves and causing disruptions in the name of progress. How does that show up in our work in technical services? Join colleagues to hear from some of the people on the front lines of technical services activism and learn about more ways to get involved.

We are happy to announce two of our speakers:

Beth Shoemaker is the Rare Book Librarian at Emory University’s Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archive & Rare Book Library in Atlanta. Her work includes cataloging, collection development, teaching and curating exhibits in the Emory Libraries. Her research interests include how practicing catalogers approach ethics in the workplace. Since its formation in 2018, she has been co-chair of the Cataloging Ethics Steering Committee, which released a final draft of the Cataloguing Code of Ethics in January 2021. Beth is a graduate of the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science.

The murder of George Floyd sparked a massive uprising in the Twin Cities, and from that anguish bloomed hundreds of art pieces around the city. After finding solace in this newly born art, Kenda Zellner-Smith quickly felt panic as she watched these pieces vanish almost as quickly as they came. With no background in organizing or art preservation, Kenda sprung into action, enlisting the help of friends and volunteers to call local businesses and roam the city, collecting the boards before they were discarded and storing them in her parent's garage.

Stay tuned for more exciting announcements! Updates will be posted on the Minitex news site at https://minitex.umn.edu/news.

Solidarity from Minneapolis,

We acknowledge that the University of Minnesota Twin Cities is located on traditional, ancestral, and contemporary lands of the Dakota and Anishinaabe peoples. We acknowledge that the US government failed to uphold the 1805, 1837, and 1851 treaties with the sovereign indigenous Dakota nation, which made possible the founding of our university through the Morrill Land Grant Act. We recognize and continually support and advocate for the sovereignty of the Native nations in this territory and beyond. By offering this land acknowledgment, we affirm tribal sovereignty and will work to hold the University of Minnesota accountable to indigenous peoples and nations.
