Dear ARLIS Members,

Bridget Madden and I are again collaborating on the VRA session for the next College Art Association Annual Conference, which will take place in Chicago, Feb 16-19 in 2022. It has not yet been determined whether CAA will be live, virtual, or some sort of hybrid conference, so I’m especially grateful to have such a terrific Chicago collaborator to make sure all the bases are covered.

We realize everyone is busy preparing the ARLIS conference, but we only have until the end of April to get the topic, abstracts, panelists, etc. together and uploaded into the CAA conference system. As a reminder, VRA is an official affiliate of CAA, so this session is guaranteed to be on the schedule, but anyone presenting has to be a current CAA member and will have to register for the CAA conference to be able to present.

So many great topics rose to the top from the VRA conference, but with all that is going on in the world right now, we think we have landed on focusing the session on critical cataloging. This seems to currently be an issue of great importance to information professionals, but also one that the artists and art historians, who usually attend CAA, are likely engaged with as well.

We would greatly appreciate ARLIS members helping us to refine the goals of this session with your experiences and hope you might be able to consider presenting at CAA 2022 or letting us know if there are others at your institutions or beyond who might fit the bill as panelists.

Here are some questions to consider:

Do you or any of your constituents have critical cataloging experiences that could be shared at CAA 2022?

Are you or your faculty and students or campus library/archives/museum colleagues engaged in protocols for inclusive language, non-western information, or best descriptive practices for cataloging works of art and architecture by marginalized or colonized groups?

Are you, your faculty and students, or campus library/archives/museum engaged in any outreach, programming, student employment, or co-curricular activities related to critical cataloging or ethical, inclusive description in the arts?

Have you developed efficient workflows for metadata scripting and transformation?

Are there any other associated ideas and issues you think worth exploring in the realm of critical cataloging?

Thank you for your consideration and any suggestions you might have about this topic and potential presenters for CAA 2022 in Chicago. Please don’t hesitate to contact either of us with any ideas in the next week or so.
