Are you new to a special collections environment, or are you interested in
moving in that direction? Learn how to encourage meaningful use of special
collections.

This course offers students a broad overview of the front-end functions of
special collections librarianship: reference and public services,
instruction, exhibition, and digital initiatives. Students who successfully
complete the course will: understand and respect established professional
best practices, legal responsibilities, and ethical considerations in a
special collections environment; creatively re-imagine the role and
potential of special collections libraries; and be able to exercise
professional judgement and balance these impulses when evaluating existing
libraries or proposing new initiatives.

This course can be taken as one of the courses in our eight-course
Certificate in Museum Informatics, but can be taken as a stand-alone course
as well.
