Digitize! Once it's electronic, with appropriate metadata driving discoverability features, Christie's can control whether to open it up or charge for access. Closing it off is close-minded. An effort needs to be made to encourage a re-think. British museums might come together to fund this, for instance, if Christie's will agree to making the archive an open resource. Then everybody wins, and a precedent is set for other auction houses.
