Greetings.  We at the National Gallery of Art (Washington) have been receiving small-format Sotheby’s catalogs.  I called them to ask if these were “full” catalogs that we should accession as I also had heard that they no longer print catalogs and have cancelled subscriptions.  I was told that they are producing a very limited number of these smaller catalogs to send gratis to some clients, including major museums.  These contain everything that a normal catalog would, although there is now a lot of supplementary content that is only online. We are cataloging all of the ones we receive.

Dear Nel

Thanks for raising this. I concluded from the FAQ on their web site https://www.sothebys.com/en/faq-help?locale=en that they were not printing any more catalogues, but now some are finding their way to us. Hard to know what is or is not being printed, and what we can rely on receiving in the way of complimentary copies sent to curators if subscriptions are no longer possible. I would be interested to hear if others have more insight.

Best regards

Jonathan

Dear colleagues,

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam collects the print versions of auction catalogues. Recently, I tried to renew our subscription to the Sotheby’s catalogues, but they are no longer renewing their print subscriptions. Do you still collect printed auction catalogues, and if so, how do you deal with this problem?

Best regards,
