Good Morning Colleagues,
The Reference and Information Services Section will be hosting an informal Zoom discussion on reference services and race on Monday, November 16. Please see details below.
Libraries and the people who work in them are not neutral. Racism commonly affects the services that BIPOC receive at the reference desk, as well as how BIPOC librarians are treated by patrons and their colleagues.
In our COVID world, these issues have not disappeared, and in the light of Black Lives Matter protests, many libraries are starting or renewing efforts to fight racism within their organizations. Still, racism persists. How can we work to change this as art
librarians, starting with one of the most essential services we offer?
Please join the Research and Information Services Section (RISS) of ARLIS/NA for a conversation about whiteness, racial justice, and reference services on
Monday, November 16 from 2-3 p.m. (E.T.). We will be moderating a discussion of “Mapping Whiteness at the Reference Desk” by April Hathcock and Stephanie Sendaula, a chapter included in the volume
Topographies of Whiteness, edited by Gina Schlesselman-Tarango, 2017, as part of a series on Critical Race Studies and Multiculturalism in LIS published by Litwin Books/Library Juice Press and edited by Rose L. Chou and Annie Pho.
Depending on the number of attendees, we will either stay in the main Zoom room or use breakout rooms to hold smaller, more intimate discussions.
The pre-print of the chapter is available freely
here. For those who wish to and are able to support the
scholars who contributed to this book, it is available for purchase
here.
The Zoom meeting for this discussion will be designated as a safe space.
Harassment or bigotry in any form will not be tolerated.
