The National Gallery of Art is seeking applicants for a Federal permanent full-time professional position in the library’s department of image collections.


This position is located on the staff of the Executive Officer for Collections, Exhibitions, and Programs (P), in the Library’s Department of Image Collections (PLI). The primary purpose of this position is to maintain and develop an extensive study collection of photographs, digital images and other visual material with emphasis on the art of France up to the year 1900.


Primary Responsibilities:

·         Assists Gallery staff, visiting scholars and public researchers with effective use of the department’s collections, providing reference assistance for locating images.  Performs specialized research for Gallery staff.  Responds to inquiries and reference questions in writing or by telephone.  Provides complete and responsive answers in both English and French.

·         Researches PLI’s collections of French art to the year 1900.  Performs complex research to maintain a strong base of research material within the department.  Identifies specific photographic images of French art needed to enhance the collection and recommends their purchase.  Researches and creates online features that highlight special aspects of the French image collection for viewing on the PLI web page(s).

·         Creates new bibliographic and item-level records using integrated library system software.  Revises records to conform to evolving standards for cataloging and classification. Contributes to the development of the department’s cataloging policy manual.  For images of Gallery objects, this requires searching of the Gallery’s automated collection management system.

·         Performs digitization of analog visual material for inclusion in Mercury.  Assists in the preservation of digital images by transferring image files onto archival media and scheduling their regular maintenance and refreshment.  Completes cataloging and digitization of images for Gallery temporary exhibitions.
